GAUTAMA'S GREAT GAME

Siddhartha Gautama [563?-483 bc] was the founder of Buddhism
and probably the best known proponent of enlightment practices.

His religion has survived and expanded for about 2,500 years now.
It is practiced by hundreds of millions of people, and in many ways
is the most successful attempt at planetary enlightenment to date.

In my experience, as a class of people, Buddhist Monks are among
the most likely to display what I consider aspects of enlightenment.
However, even for them, who have TOTALLY devoted their lives to
enlightenment, it is apparently still a hit-or-miss affair.  MOST of the
monks I see in Buddhist Wats do *NOT* strike me as very aware.

So MY estimate is that even 50 years of total devotion may-or-may-not
get you "there," or "here," as the case may be. Apparently, many wave
off this uncomfortable fact with a casual "It takes many lifetimes!"  I am
NOT willing to go into apathy on the goal of "ENLIGHTENMENT NOW!"

Given that so many people were SO suitably impressed with him, I am
willing to accept as fact the idea that the Buddha DID achieve extremely
high levels of awareness or enlightenment.  In spite of that, the question
remains: WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM?  WAS IT STABLE?  We often hear
stories about the Abbot of this-or-that monastery being reincarnated, but
the Buddhist church has never recognized reincarnations of Buddha
HIMSELF.  Did he take a vaction, go to another planet, or simply cave in?

If Gautama's Great Game of enlightenment has had slow and/or unreliable
success in individual cases, in my opinion it has fared even worse at making
enlightened societies.  Just as Christianity has failed to Jesusize the nominally
"Christian" societies, so Buddhism has failed to Buddhify the "Buddhist" ones.

Bluntly, NONE of the major cultures, civilizations, or religions has risen above
lies, deceit, criminality, corruption, and thorough immersion in MAYA ITSELF.
The Buddhist cultures, being MUCH older than Western European ones, ARE
much richer culturally and aesthetically, but they are hardly sane or enlightened.

Regardless of what happened to Gautama, the limits of his technology appear
to be rather curcumscribed in general application.  First of all, enlightment with
it's methods is so FRAGILE that it requires "REMOVAL FROM THE WORLD".

You need to "get thee to a nunnery," where you completely give up all vestiges
of sex, children, family, career, property, and most other typical modes of self
expression, for complete 24/7 immersion in meditation and communal service.

One apparently "rises above" the ego by utterly destroying it thru annihilation.
It seems that ANY SLIGHTEST attention on "worldly affairs" will derail much
or all of your progress to enlightenment.  This is NOT an unqualified success.

My immediate suspicion is that this is because the practice of being a monk,
in many cases, simply builds a MONK-IDENTITY, and that exposure to the
"real world" FLOPS THAT VALENCE TO ANOTHER PROSCRIBED ONE.
If so, this is hardly a stunningly aware or resilient "enlightenment product."

Since only men can become monks, this postpones the start of the journey
of enlightment to AT LEAST "next lifetime" for half the world . . . the women.

Furthermore, this means that ALL the children will be borne and raised by
THE UNENLIGHTENED *CRAZY* PEOPLE!  THIS IS *NOT* A RECIPE
FOR AN ENLIGHTENED CULTURE OR PLANET.  Sending them to the
monks for education AFTER they are screwed up is *NOT* OPTIMUM!

Even though I DO have great love and respect for the Buddha, and in fact
*BECAUSE* I have great love and respect for him, I ask these questions:
    WHAT did he really accomplish?
    WHAT did he NOT accomplish?
    HOW CAN WE IMPROVE ON HIS CONTRIBUTIONS
    TO THE "GREAT GAME" IN THE "HERE AND NOW"?

    WHAT did he really accomplish?

He apparently advanced enlightenment technology far beyond
it's existing "state of the art" in the time and place he lived.

He apparently achieved a very high level of awareness himself.

He certainly got a *LOT* of people interested in enlightenment.

He got many of them to higher states of awareness than were ususal.

He started a major religion which has survived, and continues to offer
its enlightenement tools to a major portion of people on the planet.

    WHAT did he NOT accomplish?

Apparently he did NOT create a RAPID, RELIABLE, and ROBUST way
for the TYPICAL PERSON to ACHIEVE ENLIGHTENMENT . . . NOW!

His methods appear to be too slow, too unreliable, and too unstable,
and are confined to the elite few who have the luxury of total devotion.

    HOW CAN WE IMPROVE ON HIS CONTRIBUTIONS
    TO THE "GREAT GAME" IN THE "HERE AND NOW"?

From *ALL* the evidence I have seen, I truly believe that UCP [Universal
Clearing Process] IS A MAJOR ADVANCE IN ENLIGHTENMENT TECH.

The first obvious application is to *USE IT* to raise one's OWN awareness!

I currently have one semi-regular co-audit and am exploring other possibilites.

The second application is to make all of the data and understanding
available to as many others as possible . . . as rapidly as possible.

Those who read ACT know I am fanatical in that regard.

I am also exploring other methods of dissemination.

The third obvious application is to start creating the social structures
that will engender enlightenment.  Even if you DO have a technology
that makes it POSSIBLE to live IN the world and not be OF it, there is
NO reason not to make it as EASY AS POSSIBLE.  We need to use
ALL our intelligence to create the conditions for those new islands of
enlightenment rising above the ocean of unawareness to fuse together
and become the CONTINENTS OF CONSCIOUSNESS which will
support the BEDROCK OF BEINGNESS FOR A SANE PLANET.
