TECHTALK #25;
WHY DO UCP?
THE EAST
The focused and determined quest for personal awareness or enlightenment is a tradition
many thousands of years old in the orient. The Bon tradition is the oldest we know.
Later came Dzog-Chen, Buddhism, and many other eastern methods, techniques, or
schools.
The most well known is Buddhism, which has hundreds of millions of adherents, and is practiced all over the world. It offers many benefits, from a comprehensive philosophy of life and awareness, to specific techniques for developing personal consciousness. It also demonstrates a great deal of workability. There are many extraordinary people who attribute their clarity and effectiveness to Buddhist meditiation. These techniques are generally self-administered, which is a large advantage for convenience, flexibility and effectiveness.
On the other hand, I judge that none of the oriental techniques is rapid, effective and reliable for the vast majority of practitioners. "Enlightenment" is generally seen as a distant goal which MAY be achieved by many lifetimes of diligent effort, NOT as something rapidly and easily attained. The rough limits of the ancient technologies may be seen in Buddhist monasteries, where men give up sex, family, career, wealth, and ALL other worldly pursuits in order to dedicate themselves 24 hours of every day to the attainment of enlightenment.
I have seen Buddhist monasteries on two continents and observe that in a wat with 20 or 30 monks, only one or two will really "have it." Bluntly, the rest of them seem no more aware than senators or congressmen. They know the words, but they are just going through the motions. It IS encouraging to see that it CAN be done, but it is also very discouraging to notice that in an arena displaying the results of many hundreds of years of meditation, there is so little of what I would consider REAL success. IF you sacrifice EVERYTHING else, you MAY be rewarded with stunning awarenesss and ability . . . or you may not. If you are a lay practitioner and mix a little meditation in with your "normal" life . . . your results will be less.
My analysis is that the successes of these techniques are a reason for hope and continued searching, but their failure to radically and rapidly change the lives of the bulk of their adherents, and to quickly saturate world consciousness with enlightenment, is a reason for disappointment . . . and continued searching. The goals of piercing the veil of illusion or rising above maya show they know WHAT needs to be done, but very few ever make it.
THE WEST
In the west we have the very new disciplines of psycho-analysis, psychotherapy, and other "scientific" attempts to understand the mind and consciousness, and thereby improve them.
These have the theoretical advantages of not requiring lifetimes of total sacrifice and commitment to be effective, and of being open to new and continued examination of methodology and results, rather than being solidified by thousands of years of tradition.
They have some major drawbacks, however. The training generally required to administer them is so long, complex, expensive and arduous that you might as well become a Buddhist Monk. I believe it takes 12 years of full-time study to train a psychiatrist . . . AFTER college. Not all disciplines take this long, but I have seen NONE that produce major, rapid, and stable results in their clients. Bluntly, the typical client and practitioner I have seen are BOTH NUTS. Yes, many people CLAIM wonderful results, but what I have SEEN has been of no more consequence than re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. It MAY give you a sense of order or progress, but you are still going down fast. Bluntly, in my estimation, these techniques or therapies DO NOT WORK. THEY DO *NOT* ACHIEVE ENLIGHTMENT.
In the west we also have the very recent innovations of self-help books, encounter groups, weekend [or longer] seminars, support groups, and so forth. Even when effective enough to produce a major shift in attitude, I have NOT seen them produce REAL increases in AWARENESS. This includes practices such as EST [now Landmark or the Forum?] and Scientology, which may have major affects on people's lives, but which do NOT create progressive unlimited enlightenment, and also suffer from MAJOR cult aspects, and cause SEVERE social, economic and psychological DAMAGE to MANY of their devotees.
THE BEST
UCP is the very best answer I know to the questions and quests of both east and west.
UCP is extremely simple. All the materials can easily be read in an afternoon. It rapidly and steadily raises awareness. Within 24 hours of practice one can expect to see real progress that is undeniable to both self and others. That same 24 hours will probably give you enough familiarity with the process to begin helping others with it. IT ACTUALLY REMOVES "THE VEILS OF ILLUSION," which is a major goal of many eastern processes, in a time span measured NOT in lifetimes, but in hundreds of hours. This progress can be seen by others.
With its comprehensive CHART of scales, it provides an effective way to MEASURE both awareness and progress therein. Thus there is FINALLY a VERY simple scientific and objective method which provides duplicable and measurable results in the spiritual realm.
It requires NO fanatic organization or sales force, and is entirely CULT-FREE. You can do it yourself with a friend in complete isolation and independence from ANYONE else. NO guru or teacher is required for any initiation [shaktipat] OR your steady and continued self-created spiritual progress. DOING UCP, YOU *VERY* RAPIDLY BECOME YOUR OWN GURU!
UCP uses a Witness, which could be seen as an inefficiency requiring two people instead of one, but the VAST increase in process velocity and results actually makes it MUCH more efficient than ANY other practice I have seen. My GUESS is that 100 hours of UCP will typically raise your awareness as much or more than 10 years in a Buddhist Monastery. That is obviously a huge generalization based only on my limited observations, but I believe it to be basically true. I intend that comment, not as a disparagement of Buddhism, which I consider to be one of the MOST effective traditional practices, but as an assertion of UCP's astonishing results. In addition, doing UCP tends to very quickly build extremely durable relationships of complete trust and transparent intimacy . . . an enormously valuable benefit.
THE TEST
I believe that UCP offers predictable, reliable and rapid access to incredibly valuable states of awareness, which have been sought for thousands of years but very rarely achieved. It is extremely simple, and all the materials are absolutely free. I believe that, "with a little help from your friends," YOU can very quickly achieve states of N-lightenment that many millions of people have struggled for without success. If I am wrong, you have little to lose but small amounts of time. If I am a little right, the rewards for you will be ENORMOUS and LASTING.
The only way you can know whether
I am right or wrong is by TESTING!
