TECHTALK #22:
MORE NORMAL
SESSION PATTERN

I see I have created confusion with multiple commands for the Univeral Clearing Process.

When I originally wrote up the CHART with the commands on it, I had NO significant experience with UCP MYSELF as a Seeker.  I had only been doing it for OTHER people.   I had several sets of commands I had been using, trying to adapt them to the CHANGING process.  I was trying to make commands that better described what was happening with the Seeker as HE changed, and therefore looked at different things in his universe.

Since then I have had over 150 hours of UCP myself, run it over 125 hours on someone else, and had input from several people who have co-audited over 100 hours each.  I actually now run UCP in an even simpler fashion than the CHART writeup describes.

I currently use the same commands all the time.  I don't change them, and I am more casual about them, BUT I CLEAR THEM BETTER.  I gave up on making more specific commands, and have gone to the absolutely most general and least limiting phrasing I could think of.

        INSTANT UCP INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP#    QUESTION OR COMMAND
======    ======================

0]        WHERE ARE YOU NOW?
           [Describe PRESENT scene to satisfaction.]

1]        WHERE MIGHT YOU BE?
           [Describe FUTURE scene to satisfaction.]

2]        COMPARE THAT TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW.
[Describe Similaries and Differences to Satisfaction]

3]        WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?
            [Describe PAST scene to satisfaction.]

4]        COMPARE THAT TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW.
[Describe Similaries and Differences to Satisfaction]

IT'S AS EASY AS A, B, C:
A]    START WITH STEP 0.
B]    REPEAT STEPS 1-4 TO *KNOW.*
C]    END WITH DISCUSSION AND AGREEMENT

        DETAILED EXPLANATION OF STEPS

0]    WHERE ARE YOU NOW?
        [Describe PRESENT scene to satisfaction.]

I just ask "Where are you now?"  If a new Seeker, I explain that this is their opportunity to LOOK at their entire life and scene and examine anything important about it.  We are NOT listing anything or looking for whys or causes or solutions or ANYTHING like that.  It's JUST a LOOK and SEE and SAY about where they are now.  "WHERE" is interpreted in the MOST general way.   I often used to say "Tell me about your universe," but it seems more logical and consistent to go with the past/present/future model, and it works just fine either way.

It's the SAME question as "What's happening with you?" or "Tell me all about it?" or any of a number of OTHER WORDS WHICH ALL MEAN THE SAME THING.  This whole discussion is probably of interest ONLY to someone LEARNING UCP.  After they get they hang of it, they don't care WHAT you say because they KNOW what they are going to DO.  It's WHAT the Seeker DOES that is important, NOT what the Witness SAYS. You could say "TALK!"

A new Seeker may well talk for two hours about his entire life.  A Seeker who has already had a session this morning is probably going to give me a minute or two about what he has noticed since the last session.  I don't care.   I let him talk until HE feels he has looked at where he is now and defined or described it TO HIS SATISFACTION.  This orients him to present time and gives a starting or reference point in the session for him to compare OTHER places to.   That's ALL I am looking for from him.  We do this at the start of session.

1]    WHERE MIGHT YOU BE?
        [Describe FUTURE scene to satisfaction.]

I used to go to the PAST command after NOW, but since I noticed that the Seeker often talks a LOT about the past in describing where he is NOW, I now go directly to the future.   This is ANYTHING he things of.  I just want him to create or notice SOME possible or impossible future.  It does NOT have to make sense or be "possible" or relate to ANYTHING.  I JUST want him to fish something out of his universe and LOOK at it.

I really don't even care if it is from the future or not.   I often have the client tell me a place he "might" be, and in the process of describing or comparing it . . . he realizes it is ACTUALLY an INCIDENT from his PAST.   Fine! He snuck up on a REGRESSION by putting it in the future to make it more confrontable!  Great! An unwritten Star Trek adventure is FINE!

I had a session recently in which "Where I Might Be" . . . was . . . *THAT DREAM* I had this morning . . . and analyzing the dream by comparing it to where I was now was PROFOUND, and took me up to KNOW in a HUGE area of my universe that was making me FRANTIC.

Notice that the same dream might have come up on the PAST leg of "Where I WAS this morning."  Often it seems RANDOM whether something comes up on the Future or Past command.  WHO CARES?  As long as it comes up, you LOOK at it!

The description of "where he might be" could be 2 words . . . or 20 minutes.  I don't really care, as long as the Seeker describes it to HIS satisfaction.  When he is ready, we go on.

2]    COMPARE THAT TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW.
[Describe Similaries and Differences to Satisfaction]

I don't even use the word "place" any more, because I don't want to define WHAT he will be comparing.  I don't know if it will be an attitude, a computation, a physical location, an activity, an emotion, a state of mind, a beingness, an identity, or WHATEVER, AND I DON'T CARE.

WHATEVER he gave me on Step 1, I just want him to compare that to where he is NOW, which MAY still be what he described Step 0, but also may well have changed since then.

By COMPARE, I am looking for SIMILARITIES and DIFFERENCES, but I only ask for them specifically if I am grooving in a new Seeker who is not used to UCP and is still feeling his way into it, and may be reluctant or inhibited in talking.  Otherwise "compare" is fine.

This step could be two sentences, or it could take two hours as he LOOKS back and forth between the two scenes over and over again, SEEING more and more CLEARLY, and describing things in more and more detail and texture . . . until he he loses interest in this.

When he is satisfied he has seen what he wants to . . . we move on.

3]    WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?
        [Describe PAST scene to satisfaction.]

This just asks for ANYTHING from his past.  It could be a exact specific incident lasting 1/10 of a second, a fleeting thought he had once 85,000 years ago as he was dying, a room he used to live in, or a broad general scene that went on for trillions of years.  I DON'T CARE.

4]    COMPARE THAT TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW.
[Describe Similaries and Differences to Satisfaction]

That is simply a repeat of Step 2, but comparing the PAST place with the PRESENT.

A]    START the session with Step 0.

This identifies the present and starts the process working.

B]    REPEAT Steps 1-4 to KNOW.

You are NOT looking for the sudden "cognition."   You want to cycle through Steps 1-4 over and over again until the Seeker comes up to KNOW in the area of the session.  He will NOT even know WHAT area or topic the session is about UNTIL THE END.  On the way there, he will DEFINITELY be at NOT KNOW and lower about the ENTIRE session, both WHAT it is about and HOW it will resolve.   If the Seeker THINKS he knows WHAT the session is about at the BEGINNING, that is simply HALLUCINATION.  Don't fight with it.  Just let it happen.  The Seeker simply has to work through his hallucinations.  You do NOT assess for or pick a topic and then "run" a session "on" that topic or ITEM.  That will *NOT* WORK.  There WILL BE some THEME, TOPIC, or AREA that the ENTIRE session is about, but you will NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT until the END of the session, when the Seeker gets up to KNOW.

C]    END WITH DISCUSSION AND AGREEMENT

When the Seeker gets up to KNOW, it will be apparent to BOTH of you.  He will KNOW WHAT the session was ALL ABOUT.  It will be CLEAR to both of you that the ENTIRE session WAS about this ONE ISSUE, even if it seems like a random stew of unrelated nonsense along the way.  At this time, he will usually give you an indication that he feels he is done with the session.  This is the appropriate time for discussion about how the session went, where he is on the tone scale, how the process is running, questions and answers, observations about life in general, or WHATEVER comes up.  Often, the Seeker will ask the Witness what *HE* THINKS about something.   The NATURAL thing to do is . . . ANSWER!

This phase might be two sentences, or twenty minutes of NEW stuff popping in to SEE.

When you both agree you are done . . . YOU ARE DONE.

        THE CIRCLE OF NOW

I see UCP as a process that starts in present time, circles around the present, and winds up in the NOW [which is simply a NEW present time].  It brings up into consciousness what is ACTUALLY but UNCONSCIOUSLY or UNKNOWINGLY already really there in present time, examines it thoroughly, and either dissolves it or puts it back where it truly belongs.

You could make a very simple circular diagram with PRESENT in the middle, FUTURE ahead, the PAST behind, and the COMPARE actions to the right and left sides.

1] FUTURE
4] COMPARE
    TO PAST
0] PRESENT
    TIME
2] COMPARE
    TO FUTURE
3] PAST

The process starts in the middle with Step 0.
Then it goes around the outer ring in 1, 2, 3, 4,
over and over until it winds up in the middle.

I used to keep work sheets with: the questions, a short summary of the Seeker's Answers, and technical notations about movements, expressions, attitudes, pauses, and so forth.  If the Seeker forget what question he was on, I would look at my notes and give him the right one.  However, lately I have stopped keeping any kind of session notes, as I realize [following the example of Scorpio and Mudrunner] they are now completely unnecessary.

I am no longer doing research to SEE *IF* UCP works, so my original purposes are now irrelevant.  All the admin I keep now is a brief session log with DATE, SESSION NUMBER, TIME OF SESSION, TOTAL TIME, and brief NOTES about what's happening in life, how the session ran, where the Seeker is on the tone scale, or anything else noteworthy.  I suppose that if the Seeker requested it for some reason, I would keep session notes, but it's really irrelevant.  It's NOT what the Witness writes down that matters, it's what the Seeker DOES.

This log simply allows me to keep track of how much UCP we have done, and what kind of results we have had in that time.  TONE LEVEL and TIME are the critical criteria.

I had a slightly embarassing problem for a few sessions after I stopped keeping worksheets: when the Seeker forgot what question he was on . . . I couldn't remember either!

I solved the problem with a mental copy of the very simple diagram above . . . and a small brass duck.  I put the duck on the arm of my chair . . . in the middle of present time.  His bill points toward the question we are doing now.  Every time I ask a new question, I rotate the duck a quarter turn.   When the Seeker needs a question . . . I have the right one "to hand."

Of course, remembering the question is only a problem at the beginning of UCP with a NEW Seeker.  As the Seeker gets more used to and grooved in on the process, he needs fewer and fewer questions from the Witness.  As he gains confidence he may run multiple questions and/or answers on his own without a question . . . and then ask for a question from the Witness when he stalls.  He may also ask himself the questions.  At some point, he may well run an entire session without ANY overt questions at all.  As long as he IS running, LET HIM RUN.  When he stalls, bogs or asks for a question . . . give him a question.

        BUMPS IN THE ROAD

The *ONLY* thing I have ever seen go wrong using UCP is that it stirs up "stuff" from the past and the Seeker starts to UNKNOWINGLY DRAMATIZE that stuff.  This can manifest in many different ways: protest, "overrun," complaints, natter about the Witness, computations of "this is stupid" "isn't working," "can't work," "won't work," ANY kind of misemotion, and so forth.  This can interfere with DOING the process and STOP the session if the Witness does not SEE what is happening and correct it by having the Seeker LOOK at what is going on.

The major thing is simply to SEE that "WHERE THE SEEKER IS" is NO LONGER where he WAS when he started the session.  The process itself has moved something else in, or moved him to a different place [take your pick of wording].  You simply need to IDENTIFY where that new [old] place, feeling, computation, effort, intention, or so forth IS NOW.

ANY kind of question focussed on WHERE THE SEEKER IS NOW will point to and bring that out.  If the Seeker's attention goes OFF of his universe and ON to you, the session, or something else, you simply need to get him to LOOK at what is happening NOW.  ASK HIM:
    WHAT IS HAPPENING?
    HOW ARE YOU FEELING?
    WHAT'S GOING ON?
    TELL ME MORE ABOUT THAT
. . . OR any other similar question that points his attention to PRESENT TIME [the center of the circle in our diagram] and gets him to LOOK at, SEE, and DESCRIBE where he is now.

Once you have identified WHAT is happening NOW in the session, you can use your understanding that this *IS* coming from somewhere else in his past universe, has been stirred up or manifested by the process as part of its normal operation, and simply needs to be addressed.  Pull out your SECRET WEAPON and ask him the MAGIC QUESTION:

    EVER FELT LIKE THAT BEFORE?

Usually the answer is "YES!" . . . and he tells you all about the PAST time or place . . . and you simply proceed with "COMPARE THAT TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW."

So the ENTIRE "correction" action when something goes "wrong" [i.e. "TOO right"] is:
1]    Witness recognizes Seeker is SOMEWHERE "ELSE" NOW.
2]    Witness gets Seeker to tell him WHAT is happening NOW.
3]    Witness gets Seeker to SPOT WHERE it is coming from in the PAST.
4]     Witness proceeds normally with the process.

*ONLY* TWO QUESTIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS "REPAIR": "NOW?" and "PAST?"

"NOW?", phrased as in any of the examples above, simply has the Seeker LOOK at what he is doing NOW in the session, instead of simply DOING it.  It is simply a NEW Step 0.

"PAST?", phrased as "Ever felt like that before?" or any other variation appropriate to whatever the Seeker gives as his answer to "NOW?", is simply a variation of "Where have you been," phrased to point to whatever spot has already been stirred up by the process.

So the ENTIRE bag of "tricks" necessary to "fix" a difficult session can be summed up . . . not in 20 different repair lists with hundreds of different questions . . . but in TWO WORDS:

NOW
    PAST

If you can just remember this VERY SIMPLE concept, then if you start to have difficulty in a session, you can VERY SIMPLY correct it. It is NOT complex.  It MAY however be difficult!
